Cataract Surgery at King LASIK
A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens. The lens lies behind the iris and the pupil and works to focus light into the retina, located farther back in the eye. The lens is also responsible for naturally adjusting the eye’s focus, allowing us to see objects at various distances. However, sometimes during the aging process the eye’s proteins clump together and cloud the lens. This clouding is known as a cataract. When left untreated, cataracts may continue to progress, causing significant vision impairment.
Although traditional cataract surgery is a complex and serious procedure, Dr. King is well-trained in the latest, most sophisticated techniques, which greatly minimize discomfort and the risk of complications. He uses the advanced “no-stitch” technique of cataract surgery, a revolutionary method that promotes higher levels of safety and comfort.
The Cataract Surgery Procedure
Dr. King performs cataract surgery on an outpatient basis. The treatment lasts about an hour, with the actual surgery lasting less than 20 minutes. After numbing the eye with a topical anesthetic, Dr. King first creates a tiny, self-sealing incision on the surface of the eye. Next, he uses a technique known as phacoemulsification to break down and suction out the eye’s clouded lens. Once this is accomplished, he carefully inserts a permanent, artificial lens implant, designed to improve the patient’s vision at most distances.
Intraocular lens implants (IOLs) are manmade lenses that are uniquely engineered to mimic the eye’s natural lens and restore visual abilities. At King LASIK, patients are provided with the best IOLs available today, including AcrySof ReSTOR and Crystalens. To learn more about each IOL, please visit the respective pages.
